I would definitely read The World of Ice and Fire last, as it contains spoilers for the Dance of the Dragons and the D&E novellas. The three D&E novellas were orginially published in 3 separate anthology books by GRRM, but on October 6th they're being published in one book to be titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which is available on Amazon for pre-orders. They begin in the year 209AC and follow the journey of Aegon V (Egg) as a child squiring for Ser Duncan the Tall. In order, they are: The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword, and The Mystery Knight. Then I would move onto the three Dunk and Egg novellas. Both can also be found online in PDF format. TPATQ was published in the anthology book Dangerous Women by GRRM and Gardner Dozois as well. TRP was published in the anthology book Rogues by GRRM and Gardner Dozois. They begin in the year 103AC and cover the Dance of the Dragons between half siblings Aegon II and Rhaenyra Targaryen. TPATQ was published first, but chronologically TRP comes first. I would personally suggest for you to start with The Rogue Prince novella and it's immediate sequel, The Princess and the Queen. Just appreciate the sheer imagination of the author and the awesome ways in which he describes unimaginable horrors. If you've read any Mark Twain you might know what I mean. Some things would even be downright controversial if written today. The Rats in the Walls (Darkest Dungeon's entire premise and setting are heavily inspired by this story)Īnd here's a gentle warning/heads up: these were written almost a century ago, and some of the language used will sound a bit foreign. You can find a bunch hosted here: Īnd here are the ones I would recommend starting with, these are some of his most well known stories: If you don't want to commit to a book yet, you can read many of his stories for free online.

Once I got hooked from reading that, I picked up Necronomicon which is the most well known collection of Lovecraft, though even more complete versions have been released in recent years (even the Necronomicon doesn't have every story he wrote). Here's what I did: I started with a smaller paperback collection of some of his most essential stories. However, these tend to be pretty bulky and, if you find that you don't care for his stuff, it'll be a bit of a waste. These days you can pick up "complete" collections of his stuff. He was a very prolific writer, almost exclusively short stories. Sure! You have a lot of ways to start with Lovecraft.
